Dallas-Fort Worth is filled with movie theaters where eating a meal or drinking a beer in your chair is part of the experience. But when was the last time you had a pint that was brewed at the theater?
Flix Brewhouse is a new-to-North Texas concept that specializes in those two very things: flicks and beer brewing. The company opened its first location in Round Rock, Texas in 2011 and is making the move into Dallas-Fort Worth with two theaters expected to open this year.
The first opens on the border of Little Elm and Frisco on Thursday, April 26. A second location in Mansfield is slated for a winter debut.
The new theater features eight screens and lobby bar with a kitchen and 7-barrel brewhouse. Guests can grab dinner in the lobby before seeing a show, order food from their seats or come to dine without a movie ticket, says Greg Johnson, director of sales and marketing for Flix Brewhouse.
Here's what you need to know before you go.
Beer
Derrick Rima, who previously worked at Franconia Brewing Co., Texas Ale Project and Four Corners Brewing Co., is lead brewer at Flix Brewhouse. In addition to making Flix's six core beers that will always be on tap (below), Rima plans to create seasonal recipes and collaborate with other local brewers to produce beers unique to the theater. The first of his original recipes, a raspberry cream ale, is timed to the release of Deadpool 2 in June.
"I'm looking forward to probably some of the best beer I've ever brewed just due to the slower pace and attention to detail," Rima says. "Having pop culture and movies to inspire beers is a really cool thing."
The core lineup includes:
- 10 Day Scottish Ale, described as "rich," "nutty" and "lightly sweet"
- Flix Golden Ale, a mild, easy drinker
- Luna Rosa Wit, a witbier brewed with blood orange and coriander
- Umbra Chocostout, a dark and robust stout with lactose and cacao nibs
- Lupulus IPA, an American-style India pale ale
- Satelliete Red Ale, which is brewed with a Belgian yeast
The Flix Brewhouse bar has an additional 27 taps to serve beers from around the region.
Food
Moviegoers can expect a menu of classic American dishes, such as burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and appetizers like chicken wings and spinach artichoke dip. There's also pizza and dessert. On weekends, the restaurant serves brunch until 1:30 p.m.
Movies
Flix Brewhouse shows a variety of new movies, some in 3-D. And just because there's beer doesn't mean it's strictly for adults. Johnson says the theater caters to families with its retro movie nights, featuring classics like The Goonies, for example. It also shows many kid-friendly movies with special programming during the summer months, says Johnson.
Opening weekend kicks off with screenings of Avengers: Infinity War, after which Flix will add more movies to its lineup. Tickets range $7.50-$10.90 per person for a new feature film to $5-7 for a throwback "Flix Picks" screening. On Wednesdays, patrons can snags tickets for $5.25.
