Edgar Winter polishes '70s sound in new CD
Neil Zlozower ' I've always considered myself something of a musical rebel, and I really miss the '70s. It was a great era of true musical freedom,' says Edgar Winter. You could accuse Edgar Winter of living in the past. But if you did, he'd probably take it as a compliment. The Beaumont native best known for his 1973 rock and pop hits "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein" returned to the era of bell-bottoms and platform shoes for his new CD, Rebel Road.

Artists show off signature looks at Tejano Music National Convention
Those who don't think Tejano artists bank on an image just as much as any other mainstream pop, rock or Latin band should have spent a long spell Saturday night at the big Tejano music dance.

Sugarland hits its full potential with new CD
Kate Powers Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles of country duo Sugarland There's a track on the new Sugarland CD, Love on the Inside, titled "Steve Earle." It's a hypertwang number, done for laughs, that pokes hillbilly fun at the acclaimed singer-songwriter's penchant for penning tunes about the women in his life. He's been married seven times, and the character in the song, hilariously embodied by Jennifer Nettles, wants to be his new Mrs. Music blog: Sugarland leaps over Miley Cyrus

Country star Keith Anderson rockin' hard
When you're as imposing a figure as Keith Anderson, you don't need to make any apologies for your music. In person, the Oklahoma native is almost intimidating; the former baseball player and personal trainer's bodybuilding physique and firm handshake keep you in check at every turn. And the country singer-songwriter's conversation proves articulate, intelligent and thoughtful. He does have a musical vision, and he's no-nonsense.

Traditional country from easy-going Brad Paisley at Superpages
Brad Paisley remembers. When so many big-selling country artists of the day are staging arena concerts that look and sound like rock shows with a different name, this West Virginia native never forgets to bring along a fiddle, steel guitar, banjo and mandolin.

Third Day steps outside religious confines on new CD
David McClister Christian rock band Third Day Making a CD titled Revelation should, well, reveal something. For Christian rockers Third Day, crafting the career-defining Revelation was an illuminating experience. Religious connotations aside, the disc, which is in stores Tuesday, proved to the four members of the long-running Atlanta band that they could step outside contemporary Christian music confines to record with a mainstream producer and sign with a top-notch company. Journey doesn't miss a ballad with new frontman
The idea of a Filipino singer becoming the main voice of American pop-rock band Journey might initially sound like a joke. This is the group from San Francisco, the one that made its name cranking out soaring rockers and ballads for mainstream U.S. radio in the '70s and '80s.
Mexico City pop-punk band Allison makes a splash in the States

Singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw rocks up latest CD
Gavin DeGraw hopes to never again get slotted into an easily marketable, moneymaking category. That already happened once, when his 2003 debut studio album, Chariot , and its acoustic counterpart, Chariot Stripped, put him in the same sensitive-male singer-songwriter confines as John Mayer.

Welcome to the new era of soul-singing white women
Welsh singer Duffy has performe at the Apollo Theater, the legendary venue dedicated to the preservation of R&B. England's Joss Stone has performed with R&B-jazzman Herbie Hancock, soulsters Stevie Wonder, India.Arie and the late James Brown. In today's world, where hip-hop is the new pop and R&B rules almighty, color barriers are all but erased. The doors didn't suddenly fling open. Slideshow: Blue-eyed soul sisters

Unhitched from major label, country singer Ray Scott remains raw
Tony Baker Country singer Ray Scott Ray Scott could have easily been another Nashville casualty. The North Carolina native's debut album for Warner Bros. failed to break on mainstream radio. He locked horns with the imprint's honchos for creative control over his brand of country music rowdy, sexy and real. On his own label now, the barrel-deep baritone has recorded another raw and raucous collection of country tunes for grownups, Crazy Like Me.

CD review: Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis
Danny Clinch Wynton Marsalis (left) and Willie Nelson collaborated on Two Men With the Blues. Two Men With the Blues, recorded in January 2007 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, is expertly played and passionately presented. Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis are audibly committed to the material, which also includes the swinging "Caldonia" and the bluesy "Ain't Nobody's Business."
